Leaders In Breast Cancer Diagnosis And Treatment
in the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia Region

Sibley's Sullivan Center for Breast Health in Washington DC fulfills the National Consortium of Breast Center's requirements for providing "comprehensive" breast care. While other centers may staff some specialists from surgery and breast imaging, only a comprehensive breast center organizes breast surgery, radiation oncology, pathology, medical oncology and breast radiology into an integrated, multidisciplinary approach that benefits the patient. Also included are psychosocial support, oncology nursing, genetic and nutrition counseling, community outreach and more. At regularly scheduled Breast Conferences, patient cases are discussed by breast radiologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, pain medicine specialists, oncology nurses and other specialties that make up the breast conference team. Together, this group explores all possible treatment options to recommend the ideal breast treatment plan.

Clinical Trials Boost Access to New Treatments

Through Sibley, patients have access to a number of national clinical trials for breast cancer, including those from the National Cancer Institute.  It has been through clinical trials that medications, such as Herceptin, have enhanced the survival of patients. As Dr. Magnant observes: "Our patients have the opportunity to receive drug regimens that may be superior to the standard treatments."
